Thame Emergency Relief
On Friday, August 16th, a catastrophic glacial flood devastated the Sherpa village of Thame in the Everest region, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this tragedy.
The Himalayan Times reports, “50% of the village has been severely damaged, with the remaining houses rendered uninhabitable.” Thame school and student hostel, the health clinic, and 30 of the villages’ 45 homes have been destroyed or severely damaged. The power supply is cut off, and the trails leading in and out of the village have been swept away.
Miraculously, all the villagers, including the 47 children at the school, were able to flee to safety.
Our immediate concern is offering immediate assistance to those affected and helping with the relocation of the students to another school. As the community grapples with this immense loss, we are closely monitoring the situation to assess how we can best support them through this difficult time. The road to recovery will be long and challenging, but we are committed to rebuilding Thame in the long term.
AHF’s roots are in the mountains, and Thame holds a special place in our hearts. Together, we can help them rebuild their homes, their school, and their lives.
Please join us to support the people of Thame in their hour of need.
