Journeys through Lo

Upper Mustang, the former Kingdom of Lo, is a time capsule of Buddhist culture, with sacred sites dating back to the 15th century. For just as long, the Loba people have carved out a living on the windswept plateau as horsemen, herders and traders on the ancient salt route that ran through Mustang. AHF has been helping the Lobas keep their traditions, and to make their lives a little easier.

Each summer, our Regional Director Bruce Moore retraces the trade route—on foot and horse—from Jomsom to Chhosar, visiting the monastic and lay schools, health posts, youth groups, and day care centers we support. He’s just back, bringing with him images of stunning terrain and Mustang’s extraordinarily hardy people.
